The Mask of Zorro (1998)

Synopsis:

The matinee hero goes to the big screen amidst lush desert landscapes and the searing heat of passion. Leading this Latin adventure is Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins as Don Diego de la Vega, the original Zorro. Twenty years later, he realizes there is a need to resurrect the legendary hero in the face of the resurgence of Spanish tyranny in the form of his old nemesis Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson). Under the guise of friendship and honor, the latter plans to buy California from the Mexican president in a bid to reassert Spanish rule, something which Mexicans like de la Vega have strongly opposed and cannot allow. Recruiting Alejandro Murieta (Banderas-The 13th Warrior) to be de la Vega's successor proves to be a difficult task, as it requires him to be transformed from a street rogue into a dashing cavalier. Things get a little hotter when the novice falls for Esperanza (Zeta-Jones-The Haunting, Entrapment) who is married to Montero and who has a mysterious connection to de la Vega. What ensues is a sweeping saga of love and honor, tragedy and triumph, with lots of clashing steel blades and cut Zs. Yes literally.
