| The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King (2003)Synopsis: Author J.R.R. Tolkien's epic trilogy, masterfully brought to life by Academy Award® winning New Zealand director Peter Jackson, finally draws to a close. An even greater, cataclysmic war against Men and Elves looms as the evil Lord Sauron turns his eye on Minas Tirith, the final stronghold. Aragorn (Mortensen, Hidalgo, 28 Days) will finally discover his kingly birthright when he tries to summon the armies, both human and undead, to battle. But he and Gandalf (Golden Globe® winner McKellen, Emile, X2) know that it can only be won if the ill-fated ringbearer Frodo (Wood, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over) is successful in destroying the ring in the fires of Mount Doom. Meanwhile as Frodo and his faithful friend Sam (Astin, Bigger Than The Sky, Elvis Has Left The Building) near their destination, Frodo grows weaker and is slowly blinded by the pure evil emanating from the ring and from Sauron, its lord and master. The creature Gollum, although he leads the hobbits' way to Mount Doom, can no longer be trusted. The fate of Middle Earth ultimately rests on the little hobbit's shoulders. Courage, friendship, honor, and duty undergo the supreme test. The final installation of "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy won in all 11 categories it was nominated in during the 2004 Academy Awards® from Best Director to Best Visual Effects. Truly a visual feast, " the jewel in the crown of the masterful trilogy," according to "USA Today." Roger Ebert says: "Return of the King" is such a crowning achievement, such a visionary use of all the tools of special effects, such a pure spectacle" not to be missed. © A.M.P.A.S.® |
