A young lawyer, Newland Archer (Academy Award-winner Day-Lewis, The Boxer, Gangs Of New York) falls passionately in love with Countess Olenska (Pfeiffer, What Lies Beneath, I Am Sam), an exotic beauty whose independence of mind is starkly at odds with the social attitudes of the time.

However, he is already engaged to the ideal society woman, May Welland (Ryder, Autumn In New York, Lost Souls). Therefore, he is forced to choose between what society expects of him and what he wants out of his own life in this lavish and meticulously-filmed costume drama from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese (Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino).

Based on the novel by Edith Wharton.
