Pavilion of Women

Synopsis:

1938, China. One nation at the brink of war. One family surrounded by opulence and adoration. One woman searching for her womanhood.

The perfection and stability that surrounds the wealthy Wu family begins to fray when Madame Wu (Luo Yan) arranges a much younger woman to be her husband's concubine on her 40th birthday. Far from an act of suicide, she hopes to relieve herself of her sexual duties and her subservience to her husband and attain spiritual freedom.

Taken by the new man in town, Father Andre (Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe, Shadow Of The Vampire, Spiderman), the hands of fate force the two to become good friends and inevitable lovers.

But Madame Wu's plans backfire - the new girl on the block fails to satisfy her husband and World War 1 ushers in a new era of uncertainty, destroying her family's peace.

Based on the Nobel prize-winning book by Pearl S. Buck, Pavilion of Women is a tale of one woman's search for true love and herself at a time when both were virtually non-existent.
