After the initial frustration, he realizes that his chances of returning to civilization and his girlfriend Kelly Frears (Hunt, Pay It Forward, What Women Want, Timepiece) are slim, so he decides to make every effort to live until the slim chance comes along. So he does for 4 years, until one day he decides to take his chance with a wooden raft with a sail that has been washed ashore.
