Almost a Woman

Synopsis:

Adolescence. Ailing circumstances. The American dream. It's all or nothing for Esmeralda Santiago, who is forced to leave her fond Puerto Rican farming memories behind in anticipation of a better life in New York City.

But the rags to riches story doesn't come cheap for Esmeralda. For starters, she's a square peg compared to her Spanish speaking classmates, and with her mother and five siblings expecting her to serve as the family interpreter, she'll have to master the English language or else.

On top of that, she's been scouted by one of her teachers to audition for the Performing Arts School in Manhattan. Big hopes. Big change. Big shoes to fill. But everyone's got it made somewhere.
