| 50 First DatesSynopsis: Underwater park veterinarian Henry Roth (Sandler, The Longest Yard, Spanglish) is a self-styled seducer of female holidaymakers on Hawaii. His single life is going well, aided and abetted by wacky local pothead Ula (Schneider, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, The Longest Yard). One day Henry meets Lucy Whitmore (Barrymore, Fever Pitch, Duplex) at a cafe. They strike up a conversation, and by day's end, both agree to meet up agains the next day at the same cafe. Henry returns, but Lucy doesn't recognize him at all. Henry soon finds out that Lucy suffers from short-term memory loss, the result of a car accident. Lucy lives the same routine every day--- breakfast at the cafe, repainting the house, watching the same TV show, going to bed. When she wakes up the next day, no trace of what she did the day before lingers in her memory. A set routine is what she lives by, and any deviation from it would wreak havoc on her already fragile state of mind. Henry is not put off. He is smitten by her, decides to woo her and help her reconnect with her past, even if it means going the extra eccentric mile to make her finally remember him in any way possible. As if her memory loss wasn't enough of a challenge, Henry has to contend with Lucy's overprotective father and steroid-laden brother Doug (Astin, Smile, Bigger Than The Sky) and make them realize that his intentions for Lucy are sincere. Although "50 First Dates" is replete with Sandler and Schneider's outrageous goofball antics, the film nevertheless treats the serious issue of short-term memory loss with tactfulness and sensitivity. |
